Although attempts have been made to confirm that those practitioners listed on the AACBT database are registered with the relevant professional registration board, it is advised that individuals contact the relevant registration body prior to engaging in a therapeutic relationship, in order to confirm the practitioner's current registration details. The AACBT does not take responsibility for individual practitioners or ethical issues related to individual practitioners.

When selecting a practitioner please bear in mind the following:

  • Don't be afraid to shop around and to ask questions: It is important that you find a therapist who is right for you, so searching around is often a good idea. A good therapist will never get defensive or be offended if you don't feel the CBT service is effective and should provide information on other available services if you ask them.
  • Check the practitioner's qualifications and professional registration: Cognitive behaviour therapists come from a wide range of professions. Most CBT practitioners are psychologists. Although attempts have been made to confirm that practitioners listed on the AACBT database are registered with the relevant registration board (usually the Psychologists Registration Board of WA), it is advised that you contact the relevant registration body of the selected practitioner/s prior to engaging in a therapeutic relationship in order to confirm the practitioner's current registration details.

Please also be aware that you can access mental health services through your GP, the Government Health Department, and various non government agencies. Many of these services are offered at little or no cost. Your GP will be able to advise you on the suitability of these services for you, and provide a referral if appropriate.
