Treating eating disorders in the real world: An update from the Eating Disorders Programme at CCI

Recent data suggest that eating disorders will affect up to 15% of Australian women in their lifetime. Despite advances in psychological treatments for these disorders, the conditions remain notoriously difficult to treat and many individuals will experience a protracted disorder course. This presentation will provide a summary of the outcome of eating disorder treatment at the Centre for Clinical Interventions, including data on differences between treatment completers and non-completers, and on differences between individuals with anorexia nervosa and those with another form of eating disorder. Details of a new treatment trial being conducted through the University of Western Australia and the Centre for Clinical Interventions will also be provided.

Understanding EMDR: A History of Practice Guiding Science

Since its beginnings, clinical observations of EMDR have influenced its scientific investigations, which in turn have influenced practice.  Whilst research has supported the efficacy of EMDR as a treatment for traumatic memories, we still know very little about how the procedure actually works.  Some researchers continue to maintain that EMDR works through processes that are identical to imaginal exposure, yet EMDR in practice is experienced very differently.  Several studies conducted by the speaker have shown that indeed EMDR is different to traditional exposure.  These findings, as well as clinical vignettes, will be presented to highlight the unique aspects of EMDR processing compared to other trauma therapies

The DASS: The Ugly, the Bad and the Good

The DASS-42 (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995) is a well used questionnaire made up of three separate scales that assess self-reported symptoms of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress (14 items per scale). The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the concerns (The Ugly and The Bad) and the strengths (The Good) of the DASS-42 for those providing clinical practice influenced by a Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) perspective. Initially, a brief history lesson about the development of the DASS-42 will be provided to demonstrate the strong conceptual background to the DASS-42, especially around the issue separating the relationship between Depression and Anxiety. In practice, however, some of this conceptual framework has been challenged, and these concerns will be outlined. In the final part of the presentation, revisions to the DASS-42 (e.g. DASS-21) and some recent developments in conceptualisation of the DASS-42 will be discussed as part of an optimistic view for the future use of the DASS-42. Finally, suggestions for clinical use of the DASS-42 in CBT practice (and general clinical practice for that matter) will be provided.
